This is the third book in the Talisman series. I have posted reviews of the first two books in the series so check those out if you are new to the series. I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The power duo of Julian and Rome returns! Julian Rider of the ancient house of Rider, along with his synergistically bonded dragon Rome, continue their mission to close portals and prevent the Darkbrands from taking Earth. Ever mindful of the upcoming battle for Earth, the boys travel with their chaperone, Mrs. Case, to New York looking for additional information about the Darkbrands and their evil intentions. Their preliminary battles have matured them and educated them on their needs and weaknesses. With the bravado of youth, they believed that they could handle a few Darkbrands easily. Their last battle was difficult and they needed Julian’s sister and her bonded dragon, Krysta, to fight with them for victory. Keeping this in mind, they know that they need to forge alliances for the upcoming battle. If they can find some talismans, they will be able to use those to their benefit also. Talismans give the holder a special skill or hidden benefit to help them. Julian’s die is one talisman and Mrs. Case’s pendant is another. There are many more talismans awaiting discovery. Will the Darkbrands find them first? Let’s hope not.

Each book in this series builds from the one before so be sure to read books #1 and #2 first. You need to understand the various creatures that come in from a portal as well as how Julian and Rome ended up together. Book #1 lays the foundation for the story. In book #3, there is considerable progress made by the characters. Julian was a whiny, sister hater and now he seems to be evolving into a more pleasant person. Dragons Krysta and Rome are developing feelings for each other. Is it because they are both dragons? Mr. Jones is a tech novice but has been using FaceTime to communicate with the team. In this book, Mrs. Case will make a big career decision. How this affects the team long-term is still up in the air. This particular story has a much smoother flow. I believe that Brett Salter seems to be more comfortable with his story and characters with each book he writes. This book moves quickly and is so action-packed that you will have to take several deep breaths when it ends. This series is perfect for middle school and older fans of dragons, epic battles, and science fiction/fantasy. We are edging ever close to the big battle, hopefully, Julian and Rome assemble a dream team.
