Truth’s Labyrinth by Jorgen Steines

Publisher: Matador

Length: 383 pgs.

I received this book from the author after translation into English for an honest review.

This historical fiction novel set during WWII is told from multiple perspectives. Johann Richter is a major in the German Abwehr. Witold, a captain in the defeated Polish Army, escaped from Auschwitz and is helping the Polish resistance. Stuart is a Lieutenant commander in the British Secret Intelligence Service. Samstag, an orphan, serves in the German army and helps hide Jewish children. Each of these men offers a unique perspective on life during this war.

Johann is a family man living in Berlin. He joined the party early and is known for his honesty. He is tasked with finding the person leaking information to the Allies. As he investigates, he will travel to various military sites. Once he sees some of the atrocities at the “work” camps, will he continue to be dedicated to the Reich? The soldiers of the conquered Polish army were taken to Auschwitz. Witold, a captain, managed to escape. He used his knowledge to aid the Polish resistance when he returned to Poland. He spreads the truth about the camps among the Polish people. As a member of the British Secret Intelligence Service, Stuart is determined to aid in the defeat of the Nazis in Europe. One of the people to help the Allies is Samstag. He is in the German army but in his spare time, he helps hide Jewish children from being sent to work camps. He finds food and medicine to help the children. His work behind the scenes is instrumental in keeping many children alive.

War impacts each character differently and each has a defining moment that causes them to question their beliefs. Are they called to action once they know the evil of Hitler? Will they be able to live with their course of action? In this story, there is a surprise ahead. Remember, this is based on history but one event that is fiction will change everything. From this point on, the book does not follow history. The unique twist provided by the author will cause you to stop and think. How will you respond to this situation? Do you think that the author’s twist is credible?

Steines’s research is evident in the depth of elements in this story. World War II novels are popular among historical fiction readers. Steines brings a wealth of details to the grim topic of war. In the unique journey of each character, we see the inner conflict that occurs when reality clashes with strongly held beliefs. One unique aspect of this book is the look at the Richter family and how they responded to the war. Were the German people deceived by their leaders? Do you accept the lies or face the disillusionment? I enjoy books that offer unique perspectives and this one delivered. Steines is an imaginative and talented author. I look forward to seeing what his next book will be about.
