Pets For Legion by Shawn David Brink

I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Sasha James is struggling. She’s newly divorced, newly relocated, and friendless, living in a small town in Iowa. While at the school where she works as a paraprofessional, an unusual scene develops outside. A man in a hoodie is chasing one of the students. By scaring off the assailant and saving the student, Sasha becomes a person of interest to the evil that resides in her new town.

What Sasha didn’t know was that this small town was being used by an evil entity called Legion. Legion uses a resident of the town as a slave. The slave recruits other people to do Legion’s bidding. What did Legion like? It liked having children to torment and the town didn’t seem to notice when one would disappear. Since Sasha intervened to stop the abduction of a child, Legion wants to see Sasha and use her as a replacement for the child she saved. What follows is a story about good vs. evil. Yet this is more imaginative than you expect. Things aren’t what they seem. Legion has deep control of this town. Even the police are involved in this story in unexpected ways.

As a reader you will be taken on a surprising adventure involving stalking, abduction, murder, evil, a golem, and a minister. It certainly takes mastery to pull divergent element like these into a compelling story.

This book is classified as Christian horror. Have you ever heard of this genre? That alone should be enough for you to read this book. After hearing about it, I was intrigued. The events in this book are well detailed and descriptions are multi sensory. It is easy to envision the horror. But what about the Christian part of this book? I am impressed. One of the main characters is a nondenominational minister. The minister prays for help, reminds others of their faith, and attempts to bring someone back to their faith. Reminders of Christianity fit seamlessly into this story. Where you would imagine awkward dialogue involving evil and God, there is none.

I highly recommend this book. Shawn David Brink has a story that pits dark and creepy Legion against the power of faith. He deftly manages to weave faith and fear into an entirely entertaining book. Go out and get your copy – get a taste of Christian horror.

My Rating: 🌻🌻🌻🌻1/2

Additional thoughts: I am glad that I had the opportunity to read a book in a new (to me) genre. I couldn’t imagine how this concept would work, but it is terrific. I read quite a bit of horror never imagining Christianity being a positive part of the book. Most mention of religion is satanic. I also wonder what drew this author to this genre. It’s far from general fiction.

When you read this book, see if you can imagine this as a movie. I found myself doing that quite a bit at the end. Now all we need is someone to make it!
