Riders of Fire and Ice: The Talisman Series Vol. 2 by Brett Salter

Publication date: October 6, 2017

Length: 220 pages

The adventures of Rome and Julian are back! Huzzah!! The boys have traveled to England as exchange students. The true goal of the trip is to understand more about their enemies by studying the Great Despot war that was fought near Camelot. Hopefully, while near Camelot, they will be able to locate more knights and dragons that can join their fight. The dormitory the boys are staying at also happens to be the same one that Julian’s sister, Camela, stays in at boarding school. Rome is curious to meet his best friend’s sister but Julian keeps referring to her as a brat. Far too soon (in Julian’s opinion), Rome and Julian meet Camela. She is petite and has a strong resemblance to Julian. As the boys begin investigating the area, they seem to keep crossing paths with Camela and her best friend Krysta. Should Rome and Julian tell Camela about their bond? Why are Camela and Krysta always together?

This second book in The Talisman Series is quick moving and will completely engross you. There is so much action that when you tell yourself “just one more chapter”, it won’t be just one. The wonderfully charming characters of Rome and Julian are complemented by the new addition of Camela and Krysta. It is nice to see that girls can also be involved with mystical creatures and worlds too. The creatures are in England too with all their grim goals and hatred of humans. To understand this book, you will need to read the first book in the series which lays the groundwork for all books going forward.

Brett Salter’s second book in this series is a smooth continuation of his saga. I like reading the second book in the series of an author. The first book is full of details, character introductions, and creation of the “world” the characters occupy. A second book should be able to take all that hard work and run. Tell the story with no holds barred. You are familiar with the style of writing and now you get to focus on the characters and storyline. I like authors that recognize you are intelligent and can remember what they did in the first book. The second book is a welcome back and should grab you and keep you captivated. This is precisely what Brett Salter did. He reminds us of very little and provides an excellent book 2. Again, this is suited for anyone middle school age and beyond.
