I received this book from the author for an honest review.
Lillian’s life had a pattern. She would go to school, come home, help around the house, eat dinner, and sleep. The next day, this would repeat except for the nights she worked in the factory as a dust hunter. (I am not explaining, read the book!) Lillian is not the size of a typical 13-year-old girl and she can see something she doesn’t believe anyone else can – she can see people with the “affliction”. This ability and her curiosity will lead her into an adventure she could never foresee.
In her town, children are being snatched and found later drained of blood. The police can’t determine how this is happening less who is doing such a vile thing. When Lillian’s best friend, Elisabeth, goes missing, Lillian decides to investigate on her own. How will Lillian find her friend? Is she too late? Lillian will be transported to worlds many of us don’t know about. Do the afflicted have anything to do with the children’s disappearances?
The characters in Night Demon are well-crafted and realistically interesting. As for the story? Well, the story is an unusual mix of genres that work in this format. Wolberius weaves horror and folklore together creating a creepy journey that feels much like a Grimm brothers’ tale. If you are squeamish, read with caution. You will meet many demons, wisps, and a wight or two. The action is non-stop so you may have to stay up all night to finish this book.
What better time to read supernatural/spooky/horror books than October? What I enjoyed about this book was the elements of folklore throughout the book. I did find myself stopping a couple of times to read about a particular folklore element. This didn’t detract from the story at all. I really liked the character of Lillian who is constantly underestimated. She is small but mighty. Instead of having to say goodbye to her, it appears there will be a book 2 with her!
My Rating: 🌻🌻🌻🌻/5
