I received this book from the publisher.

The Ramirez family lives in Staten Island. Jessica, Ruthy, and Nina are being raised by their parents ina Puerto Rican neighborhood. When Ruthy tragically disappears on her way home from school, the Ramirez family changes forever. The search for Ruthy turns up no leads. Mr. Ramirez dies of heart problems and Mrs. Ramirez struggles with her health. Ruthy is never far from anyone’s mind. One evening Jessica spots someone who could be an adult Ruthy on a reality tv show. She is stunned and wonders how will the family react?

Over the years there have been many different theorys around Ruthy’s disappearance. Did she run away, get abducted, or die? As the sisters begin discussing the “reappearance” of Ruthy, what will they do? Will this person resembling Ruthy turn out to be her? The family comes together, united by a common purpose. The fractured family has hope and that sends them on a common task of confronting Ruthy. How will Ruthy respond to the confrontation with her family?

The loss of a family member is difficult and compounded by not knowing what happened and why. The author shows how deeply Ruthy’s absence permeates the fabric of their lives. As you read you wonder what difference would Ruthy have made in the family dynamic? How would all of their lives change?

Claire Jimenez narrates the story using various family members. Each person reveals Ruthy’s influence on their lives. The author does a powerful job revealing how intertwined lives can be. One missing thread does effect the fabric of life. Much like the Christmas movie “It’s A Wonderful Life”, one person’s absence matters. The topic of making a difference in life is one that youth often overlook. Reading and discussing this book could help young adults realize their importance.

Claire Jimenez’s first novel is compelling, with themes that resonate with everyone.
