I received the book from the author in exchange for an honest opinion.
Darien Rhodes is a smart young man attending medical school. He chooses to enlist in the military and finish his medical training. After graduating, he became a world-class physician specializing in Infectious Disease. His career in the military ends as he disagrees with a superior over the cause of death.
Darien’s career in America is over, he has been blackballed. He does find employment in Santo Domingo at the Ibero-American University in the Dominican Republic. He is a professor in the Department of Medicine and hates every minute of it. He misses America and only endures this position, hoping his reputation will be restored. Darien is a semi-functional alcoholic. Everything changes when Terry Martin walks into his office.
Terry Martin and her father have found what they believe to be one of the richest gold mines in decades. They expect to have their find confirmed in several weeks by an independent firm. At their site, there are 2 dead employees. They offer Darien a job examining the workers and explaining their deaths. The deaths need to be kept quiet, preserving stock prices. Darien travels to the mine. He finds 2 people who died similarly to the person he examined years ago, and the case that cost him his job.
Darien must investigate this mystery and bioterrorism. What killed these men in such an unusual manner? A colleague from his past returns with an ultimatum, leading to a no-win situation.
I mistakenly thought this would be a simple medical mystery, a quick and easy book to read. I admit, I was wrong. Vaccine is a complex, engrossing story leading to an unpredictable outcome. The characters are well-crafted and completely believable. The medical and virology information presented by the author is complex but understandable. The idea that a group of people or a government might expose us to something that would lay dormant in our bodies awaiting activation is frighteningly believable. I enjoyed this book for the vivid descriptions, uncommon locations, and the fascinating medical mystery. Fans of Tess Gerritsen and Robin Cook will thoroughly enjoy this novel.
I recommend this book to all thriller and mystery fans!
