Matt Church is an orphan. Recently he has experienced changes that make him feel foreign. In the past year, at night, his eyes glow. What does this mean? He is tired of being the source of amusement for the older boys at the orphanage and hopes that his parents will come and rescue him. Surely they will be able to explain his eyes to him. Matt is about to be adopted. When he arrives at his new home, he has inexplicable rules he is asked to follow. He isn’t allowed outside, which feels like torture to him. His adoptive father has a room full of mysterious equipment and potions. He finds a way to escape to Central Park. Will he be discovered?

He will encounter demons and friends, learn about himself, and grow in confidence. What dark secret will he discover? Have you ever explored under Central Park?

This is a delightfully imaginative and beautifully illustrated book set in New York City. Take time to view and enjoy the illustrations, they bring life to much of the story. Creating an alternate world is no easy task. D.W. Spinola unveils the inhabitants (good and bad) living under Central Park. The names of these creatures are fascinating. How do you imagine them to look? As is true in life, not everyone you encounter will be nice. This adventure transforms Matt from a bullied orphan to a strong, courageous explorer. He is faced with many challenges and will handle them.

D. W. Spinola has crafted an amazing adventure. This fast-paced story is exactly what will capture the minds of middle schoolers. The page count might seem daunting but the story moves rapidly. This is the first book, be sure to look for the next one!
