Life is complicated. Georgia Grayson knows well how hard it can be. She is a top neurosurgeon, a wife, and a mother. This delicate balance is maintained with the help of her loving husband Adam. Daughter Lara, without intending to, upsets this balance. She decides that for her school assignment she would like to know the real details of her father’s life and death. Georgia is forced to face the past that she successfully put behind her. In doing so, she begins suffering a career ending panic attacks.
To alleviate her panic attacks, Georgia begins psychotherapy. Dredging up the past isn’t easy since Georgia actually suffered a breakdown at the death of Lara’s father, Danny. Homelife suffers as Georgia focuses on herself. She begins remembering the events of Danny’s death and realizes that she needs to deal with what happened and give her daughter the answers that she needs.
Laura and Georgia embark on a trip from London to New Orleans to see where Danny lived. They hope to visit Danny’s grandmother to see what reception the family might have to Danny’s child. When Danny died he was with Georgia on an island and he fell off a cliff to his death. Georgia can’t remember why they were there in the middle of a storm and what caused Danny’s fall. At his funeral, Danny’s parents made it clear to Georgia’s parents that they never wanted to meet her or hear from her. Georgia and Lara arrive in New Orleans only to find that a hurricane is on the way. Will they be able to evacuate in time? How does the hurricane change their plans to meet Danny’s grandmother?
The Moon is Missing is a beautifully written story of love, loss, family, and facing your past. The delicate balance that exists between work and family is beautifully shown as well as how easily it can be disturbed. Jenni Ogden’s story is rich in details and full of emotion. As trouble at home mirrors the trouble in Georgia’s memory, the anguish of the children is deeply felt. The reunion with Danny’s family brings shocking surprises that the Greyson family must work through.
I recommend this book. It is very easy to read and the pages seem to turn themselves. The details of Hurricane Katrina are riveting and you won’t want to put the book down.
My Rating: 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
Additional Thoughts: I really enjoyed this book because the characters were complex and flawed. There’s nothing trite about this story and the author embraces it with gusto. Jenni Ogden shines a light on the helpful nature of psychotherapy while having her character resist the help. In time the character responds and the process proves beneficial to her and her family. I’m glad she provided such an understandable example.
Book Description:

An island at the bottom of the world.
From Jenni Ogden, author of multiple-award-winning A DROP IN THE OCEAN, comes a page-turning tale of family secrets and mother–daughter conflict set in London, New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, and on a remote and spectacular island off the coast of New Zealand.
Georgia Grayson has perfected the art of being two people: a neurosurgeon on track to becoming the first female Director of Neurosurgery at a large London hospital, and a wife and mother. Home is her haven where, with her husband Adam’s support, she copes with her occasional anxiety attacks. That is until her daughter, 15-year-old Lara, demands to know more about Danny, her mysterious biological father from New Orleans who died before she was born. “Who was he? Why did he die? WHO AM I?” Trouble is, Georgia can’t tell her. As escalating panic attacks prevent her from operating, and therapy fails to bring back the memories she has repressed, fractures rip through her once happy family. Georgia sees only one way forward; to return to New Orleans where Danny first sang his way into her heart, and then to the rugged island where he fell to his death. Somehow she must uncover the truth Lara deserves, whatever the cost.
