The Cicada Tree by Robert Gwaltney

Analiese Newell lives in the small town of Providence, Georgia. Everyone seems to know everyone else’s business. Her daddy is a drunk that runs the local bait and tackle store. Her mother works for the wealthiest family in the area, the Mayfields. One weekend Analiese is allowed to go with her mother to work since the Mayfields are away. As her mother began her job, Analiese walked through the house. The house is completely amazing to Analiese. She walks into a room and sees the breathtakingly beautiful Mrs. Mayfield. What will be said about Analiese in their house? Analiese worries that her mother will lose her job. Analiese becomes obsessed with the Mayfield family. Who are the other members of the family? When Marlissa Mayfield begins attending her school, Analiese is convinced they will become best friends. Is Analiese correct? Would a wealthy family allow their child to spend time with a poor child?

Marlissa’s arrival changes the dynamic among the girls at Annaliese’s school. Now Marlissa calls the shots. Will Annaliese succumb to the Mayfield magic and give in? Will the girls accept Annaliese or will she be an outcast? The dynamic of rich vs. poor is evident in the treatment of Analiese. Other elements include racism, infidelity, mysticism, and magic. This is Southern Gothic reminiscent of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

There are a multitude of reasons to keep you turning the pages. Analiese is a fascinating character that never bores you. What is that extra special something that the Mayfields have? Providence Georgia is mystical and Analiese and her family are not immune to this. They have powers that are inexplicable and inspiring. Circumstances will lead Analiese directly to the Mayfield’s door. What will this visit set into motion? One thing can be certain, this town will never be the same once the cicadas arrive.
