Old Country

I received this book from Grand Central Publishing. Thank you!!

We all have an idea of what our dream home looks like. Whether we find it or have to build it, there is such joy in living in it. Harry, a former Marine, and his wife Sasha find their dream home in Idaho with an amazing view of the Grand Tetons. They are so happy and can’t believe they are lucky enough to have found such a gorgeous location. There a very few people living in their valley. In fact, they only have one close neighbor couple. Their neighbors seem nice until they come over and start explaining about certain events that will happen seasonally. As each event happens, there is an action required of the homeowner to keep trouble from escalating. After listening to some of this “information” Harry and Sasha ask the neighbors to leave and not return. Days later, the first strange event begins. When what the neighbors warned about happens, will they stay or leave this place? How long have these strange occurrences been going on? Have the others who have lived here had to deal with this too?

Matt and Harrison Query have created an imaginative, weird, and gripping story about the spirit of the land. They also do a good job delving into the give and take of married life. As Harry and Sasha go through the actions necessary for the manifestations, Harry decides to let the spirit know he owns that land. The land does not believe that it is owned. It believes that it is impossible to be owned. The manifestations are the land’s way of reminding humans that they are merely inhabiting. Will the strain of these happenings hurt their marriage? Harry and Sasha are likable characters reacting to difficult circumstances. The concept of land reacting to inhabitants is interesting. If this particular location has a spirit, why don’t others? There is a manifestation each season that is unique. Have the manifestations always been the same or have they evolved over time? I don’t believe this is part of a series, but there are a few questions that remain unresolved.

With the creepy nature of this story, it is a perfect read for a fall day curled up on the couch. Does the land have its own spirit? It certainly is an idea worth exploring!
