Kay Scarpetta is the Chief Medical Examiner. She is testifying in a contentious, high profile trial when the judge’s sister is discovered dead. As Dr. Scarpetta examines the area where the judge’s sister is found, she finds that this is far more than a simple death. No obvious signs of burglary, or assault to the victim. What she has discovered is frightening though. Nearby, another inexplicable scene is found with similarities. What is happening? The FBI takes over in the investigation of both scenes. Why?
This murder thriller follows the steps of an investigation. Often referred to as procedural, there is a very specific method that is followed. It is essential to the credibility of the investigation that each step is followed and documented. Scarpetta mentions the care necessary to avoid cross-contamination. Adherence to procedure can be frustrating for people who like to cut to the chase, crime junkies will enjoy following along. As the investigation reaches conclusion, it is a cautionary warning of how technology can influence crime.
Patricia Cornwall’s character, Kay Scarpetta, has been refined over the course of 26 books. She is a strong and intelligent character. I like her humility. She doesn’t seek media approval, she simply does her job. Her no-nonsense approach inspires loyalty in her friends and most co-workers. Scarpetta reminds me of Erin Reagan on Blue Bloods with her dedication and intelligence. Cornwall has developed a variety of characters, some from previous books, others are new. While you don’t need to read all of the previous books, it might help explain some references and relationships. Whether you’ve read all her books or just this book, Patricia Cornwall has written a book that will hold your interest during those cold winter nights.
