I was contacted by the author, who had recently translated the book from Romanian to English. Frankly, I love reading books set in different cultures; you learn so much!

We meet Iris, a young woman working as a courier. While on a delivery, she runs across a charming man, Sorin Carp. They are happily married. Iris is pregnant with their first child. Her world comes crashing down when the police arrive at her door to escort her to her husband’s bedside. He has been fatally injured in a car crash. Iris’s world stops. She is in the deepest despair over his death. Before he died, Sorin asked Iris to move on.

Adrift after her husband’s death, Iris struggles to accept the accident report. Sorin was an investigative journalist and had made enemies with his writing. Iris is contacted by a colleague of her husband with important information. Based upon this information, Iris begins her own investigation. It is obvious that sinister forces caused her husband’s death. The closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous her life becomes. This corruption involves people in important government jobs as well as truly evil criminals. Iris’s investigation threatens not only her life but also the lives of her family. Can she stop her investigation and walk away, or will she see this through to the end, no matter the cost?

Corruption occurs everywhere. It is not limited to one country, type of person, or style of government. Robert Veress’s book Iris shows how corruption can begin and build to astonishing levels. The people determined to stop or expose corruption become targets as the corrupt exert maximum effort to continue the ruse. As we follow Iris’s investigation, the collusion between criminals and law enforcement becomes obvious. Once the corruption is uncovered, Iris dedicates herself to finishing the investigation her husband started.

Iris is a well-crafted psychological thriller/murder mystery. Each page draws you a little deeper into this corrupt situation. I found myself admiring the dogged determination that Iris had to uncover the truth. Her love and dedication to her husband are touching and understandable. Iris is a very relatable character.

This book is a true page turner. Crime and thriller readers will welcome the thought-provoking writing of Robert Veress. I look forward to reading other books by this talented author.
