Amelia Paignton was a wife, mother, and caretaker. Her husband Leo dies of Alzheimer’s and her life changes. She has been isolated with Leo on the island of Papua New Guinea. Without Leo to care for and both daughters settled in their own lives what comes next? Ignoring the advice to not make any major decisions within the first year of becoming a widow, Amelia decides to move to Venice. Why? She doesn’t even know how to speak Italian! Amelia has been stuck. Stuck in one spot as life has continued without her. She wants to be on her own, answering only to herself. Arriving in Italy, she meets people who accept her as she is. As her friendship grows, they help her learn the language and customs of the Venetians. She also learns that grief is not a linear process. She will have good days and some not-so-good days. Her friends sense when she needs space and when she needs a shoulder to cry on. Little by little, the charm of Venice will heal her.

Apple Gidley has written a love letter to Italy. She takes us to several other cities besides Venice and each is as beautifully described as Venice. Her lyrical descriptions make it easy to visualize Venice. All of the characters are well thought out and the dialogue and situations are realistic. Following Amelia not only makes me want to visit Italy but also makes me wish Amelia were my friend. Dealing with death brings a depth of feeling that Apple Gidley understands. Amelia’s journey is emotional, heartfelt, and deeply moving.

This past year was a year of deep loss, this book helped me confront my emotions and heal. As Amelia’s story ends, we are filled with contentment and hope. There is much more to Amelia’s story and you need to experience it for yourself. I recommend this book to everyone – this story will stay with me and be one I want to read again.

I would like to thank the author Apple Gidley for the advanced reader copy of this book. I look forward to reading your next book – I’m sure it will be wonderful!
